History
The Community Extension Services (CES) formerly Social Action Community Outreach Program (SACOP), of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University is the third pillar in the triad of functions of the institution. Created in 1985, it is designed as an arm of the school with the aim of bringing the community to the school and the school to the community.
Barangay Ta-al in Molo, was chosen because of its proximity to JBLFMU-Molo. Health sanitation, drug abuse, and unemployment were among the common problems of this barangay as revealed by its residents. Free medical consultations and free medicines were given to the indigent families of the barangay as its first move. The “Pamasko sa Barangay” was considered as one of its remarkable projects. The literacy program for children from ages 3 to 12 years old was launched as a pilot extension program. When the school’s community organizers felt that the people of the Barangay Ta-al were already able to sustain themselves economically, the team started to look for another barangay in need of assistance.
The year 1992 marked the beginning of the JBLFMU Community Extension Programs in the adjacent barangay at Puerto del Mar, ( Sitio Alubihod) Barangay Poblacion, Nueva Valencia, guimaras. Twenty-one (21) families were chosen. To address some of their needs, an artificial reefs project was extended to this particular barangay.
In 1995 the JBLFMU-Arevalo Community Extension Services started to reach out to the people in the neighboring barangay, Sto. Niño Sur in Arevalo. The indigent families of the barangay were the recipients of such undertakings as medical mission, skills training, Pamasko sa Barangay and some livelihood projects.
The Community Extension Services of John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation-Bacolod started on July 2, 1999 with Purok Sea Side Barangay Tangub, Bacolod as its adopted barangay. A community baseline survey was conducted among the randomly selected 278 families. Through the “adopt a barangay” project of the extension office, the vision and mission of the university became a reality.
In 2002 Sitio Daku in Barangay So-oc, Arevalo became an adopted barangay of JBLCF-Molo. Throught he concerned efforts of the University officials and personnel, and the barangay officials and residents of Sitio Daku, the projects and programs brought to this community have given the people the much needed support.
The Community Extension Services (CES) programs, services and activities are planned and implemented by the Community Extension Services coordinator , other officers, faculty and staff as well as student volunteers. Through a life-centered and society-oriented living, everyone involve in the CES develops his/her social awareness and concern for the community. The realization of the ongoing and new program is made possible with the help of the school community as well as the administration. The leaders of the community find solace in the thought that they have an ally in their effort to build their community.
At present, the Community Extension Services (CES) exists mainly through the support of JBLFMU Administration with some help from governmental and non-governmental agencies tapped occasionally by the CES coordinators/officers.
